We all know that lightning has a strong voltage and current. The average current of lightning reaches 30,000 amperes, and the maximum current can reach 300,000 amperes. The voltage of lightning is even more exaggerated, ranging from 100 million to 1 billion volts.
According to estimates, the power of a moderately intense thunderstorm can reach 10 million watts, which is equivalent to the output power of a small nuclear power plant.
Under such a high-intensity current and voltage, any electronic equipment cannot withstand it. Therefore, when there is a thunderstorm, the closer the LED display is to the minefield, the more vulnerable the internal electronic components are to lightning.
If the LED display is struck by lightning, it will cause serious damage to the internal wiring, and even cause a fire.
- For protection against direct lightning strikes, install lightning rods on the support structure of outdoor LED displays (especially double-column outdoor LED displays). Indoor LED displays or LED displays with tall buildings next to them can be installed without considering lightning rods.
- For the counterattack of the steel structure, connect the steel structure with the shell of the LED display, make equipotential, and do a good job of grounding. The grounding resistance is generally required to be less than 10 ohms. If the resistance value does not meet the requirements, an additional artificial grounding grid. The lightning arrester should also be well-grounded.
- For the lightning current induced on the power line, install a single-phase or three-phase power supply lightning protection device on the power line. The cross-sectional area of the link line of the phase line should not be less than 10 square millimeters, and the cross-sectional area of the connecting ground wire should not be less than 16 square millimeters.
- For the lightning current induced on the signal line, install a signal lightning protection device on the signal line. The signal arrester depends on the signal interface of the system. If it is a network cable, install a network signal arrester, and a serial interface, install a DB9 interface arrester, etc. The cross-sectional area of the connecting ground wire cannot be less than 1.5 square millimeters.
Through the above measures, we can minimize the impact of lightning as much as possible, so as to ensure that our outdoor LED display can easily cope with the impact of summer lightning.
